Alright, well the blog thing definately didn't work out. I made one post right before I came up here, and now my second post is three months in. It is ok, knowing myself I half expected this to happen. The problem up here is a limited amount of internet, a limited amount of time, and a very limited amount of inclination. I am only updating right now because I am killing time before I go zip-lining today!

Now, it's difficult to make a blog update because so much has happened since my last one that there is no way I am going to attempt to cover it all. So I'll just cover the basics.

No, I have not wrestled a bear, frolicked atop a caribou's antlers, or obtained a bald eagle as a pet :) but I have seen all these animals since I've been up here! Most of the time I see them while working on the train, which I must say is a pretty awesome job. While working with tourists can often be a frustrating (to say the least) thing, I still have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world while traveling up a beautiful mountain pass on a historic train every day. I love my co-workers and house mates (most of which are both). On my days off I get to enjoy being in a really cool town in a beautiful part of Alaska and do awesome things like zip lining, dog mushing, etc. So my point is, be jealous, because life up here is great!

I'm Off!

So, you may or may not be aware, but this Sunday I am heading to Alaska for a job on a train in Skagway as a tour guide. Skagway is a small town well situated between deep water ports (perfect for big ships), and a mountain pass leading into the Yukon interior where all the gold was being discovered, thereby playing a role in the Alaska Gold Rush of 1897. Eventually a railroad was built though this mountain pass (called the White Pass). For many years the White Pass was an important road into the Yukon. Today, however, it is used for tourist purposes. I will work as a tourguide on this train, showing people the scenic route to the Yukon interior. So, yeah, I'm pretty adventurous. And you should probably be jealous, don't worry, it's a natural feeling.

So, while I'm up there, I'll probably cover all the Alaskan basics. Wrestle a bear. Pan for gold. Fall in love and run away with a rustic mountain man, only to find that he makes millions in the alaskan fishing boat trade.
See that bear, yep don't worry about it; I'm going to wrestle with him and take him down with my bare (pun intended) hands.

See that fish? A pittance compared to what I'm going to catch... with my bare hands.

I'm pretty sure this is what we call "Baked Alaska." 'Nuff said.

Everyone in Alaska gets their own team of sled dogs and their own pet bald eagle. I think I'll name my eagle Brock.
Yeah, so I'm gonna take my dad's animal calls, travel out into the wild, call this caribou until he comes, and befriend him to the point that he lets me ride atop his antlers as we frolic through the forest.

Yes, it is what you think: the Eskimo woman is going to teach me to speak whale. Need I say more?
Sarah Palin and I already have a jogging date set up. Then we will have brunch at her house from which I hear there is a lovely view of Russia. ;)

I get to take a little bunker plaine like this to get into Skagway (that one's actually true!)

So, yes, I'm very excited, though I am also a little scared, and I am really sad that I won't be getting to spend this summer with my family and friends at home. However I think its going to be a really good experience and I hope that proves to be true. I will try to keep this blog updated, and next time I should have some pictures of my own to show (my wonderful parents got me a camera as an early birthday present so that I could take some good pictures for this adventure).
